The annual East Ayrshire Primary Schools’ Cross Country took place once again at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena with 23 primary schools taking part in four different events. The pupils showcased their athletic talent in the P6 Boys, P6 Girls, P7 Boys and P7 Girls’ categories.
Coordinated by East Ayrshire’s Active Schools team and supported by East Ayrshire Leisure and Kilmarnock Harriers, the event is part of the East Ayrshire Athletics Partnership programme calendar which aims to increase opportunities for young people to access athletics disciplines and increase their physical activity levels.
The 2024 Primary Schools’ Cross Country saw 460 children actively taking part, and medals and certificates were presented to the first three individuals of each race and an overall winning team for each race.
Provost Claire Leitch said: “It was excellent to see so many of East Ayrshire’s young people taking part in an outdoor sport, enjoying themselves and having their schoolteachers cheering them on. The weather didn’t hold them back and these events continue to showcase the excellent sporting infrastructure that we have in East Ayrshire.”
Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education and Children and Young People, said: “The sports partnerships and East Ayrshire Sports Council continue to support the schools, communities and people of East Ayrshire with sporting opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
“Support from Active Schools, Vibrant Communities, East Ayrshire Leisure and Kilmarnock Harriers made this event a real success and every young person, even if they didn’t win, left with a smile on their face.”
Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Spokesperson for Housing, Transport and Communities, said: “It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying the day. Events like these not only promote physical health, but also teach valuable life skills such as perseverance, teamwork and resilience.
