Fashion students design brand new tartan

One of Scotland’s most highly-regarded home builders, WestPoint Homes came to Ayrshire College’s Ayr Campus recently to judge a competition involving fashion design students.

The students from the Ayr Campus were given a design brief from Westpoint Homes to design a tartan throw, in-keeping with the company’s design aesthetic and corporate colours. The builders wanted to ensure that the design for the interiors of the houses being built in Fenwick reflected the local heritage and the village’s roots in Scotland’s weaving industry.

Each student created mood boards with their design ideas and after much deliberation, the judges awarded the winning design to student Ellis Bird. The winning design, woven by local firm Begg and Co, will be displayed in Fenwick show homes and as part of the welcome pack to new home owners. Runners-up Emma Hyslop from Kilmarnock and Nicole Christie from East Kilbride received vouchers. Ellis, from Ayr, said “I am really happy to win the competition, and really enjoyed the process. It’s fantastic that my design will be around for a while for new home owners to enjoy.” Arts and Fashion Lecturer, Elaine Watson said “The opportunity for our students to work with external partners is always exciting. As a team, we were all impressed by the standard of the projects submitted. The opportunity to have the winning design produced by Begg & Co and distributed by a high end developer is an impressive addition to any portfolio. We are very proud of all our students that entered and look forward to seeing the finished selected product.”
