Gas network company SGN is investing £2m to upgrade the gas network in Ayr to ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply.

The project involves replacing old metal mains, reaching the end of their useful lives, with new plastic pipe which has a lifespan of around 80 years. This will help ensure local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply long into the future.
Following close consultation with South Ayrshire Council and Ayrshire Roads Alliance, SGN’s work will predominantly take place in the Seafield. Holmston and Castlehill areas and will start on Tuesday 7 April.
SGN’s project will be carried out in two phases to limit disruption as much as possible.
Phase 1
Phase 1 begins on Tuesday 7 April in the following streets over a period of approximately four months:
• Ashgrove Street, Burns Statue Square, Carswinshoch View, Doonfoot Road, Holmston Road, Mill Street, Parkhouse Street and Station Bridge Road.
For everyone’s safety during this phase, temporary traffic lights will be needed on Doonfoot Road from 20 April to 14 July. SGN may also need to use temporary traffic lights on Holmston Road from 28 April to 27 July.
Phase 2
Phase 2 begins on Monday 1 June in the following streets over a period of approximately 5 months:
• Belmont Avenue Jct, Bentfield Avenue, Blackburn Road, Castlehill Road, Dongola Road Jct, Inverkar Road Jct, Racecourse Road, Racecourse View, Ronaldshaw Park, Southpark Road, Victoria Park, Westfield Road, and Wheatfield Road.
For everyone’s safety during this phase, SGN will need to use temporary traffic lights on Racecourse View and Racecourse Road from 1 June until 24 August.
As the temporary traffic lights move along Racecourse Road SGN will need to close Victoria Park, Bentfield Avenue, Southpark Road, Blackburn Road, and Ronaldshaw Park one at a time, at their junctions with Racecourse Road, to help improve traffic flow on Racecourse Road.
SGN spokesperson Waseem Hanif said: “We’ve worked closely with South Ayrshire Council and Ayrshire Roads Alliance to limit disruption during our essential project.
“The new plastic pipe we’re laying has a lifespan of approximately 80 years. This means once our work is done, Ayr residents and businesses will be able to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.
“We would like to thank everyone affected for your patience, understanding and support as we work to improve the energy infrastructure in Ayr.”
