The family of Michelle Stewart, a 17-year-old who was tragically killed in Drongan, have expressed deep disappointment after her murderer was released from prison following 16 years behind bars.

In 2008, Michelle lost her life in a violent attack near a local shop. Her killer, John Wilson, had targeted his former girlfriend in an act of extreme violence that shocked the local community. He was sentenced to life imprisonment later that year.
In the years since her death, Michelle’s family have campaigned tirelessly through an initiative called Michelle’s Law. Their efforts have focused on ensuring the rights and well-being of victims’ families are central to decisions about parole and early release.
Despite these efforts, Wilson’s release was confirmed this week after a fourth parole hearing. His freedom is subject to strict conditions, including a ban on contacting Michelle’s loved ones and restrictions on living in North, South, or East Ayrshire.

The family shared the news on Wednesday via the Michelle’s Law Facebook page, which is run by Michelle’s sister Lisa.
Lisa wrote: “After fighting the past four years, three of which have been successful, John Wilson has today been granted parole. To say we are disappointed is an understatement. I am gutted that Michelle’s killer is now free to roam the streets and live freely while Michelle lies in a cemetery through HIS actions.
“I will continue to advocate and fight for victim’s rights to try and bring about some sort of change within the justice system to try and make it a more fair and balanced system for ALL.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us in the fight to keep him off the streets and in jail.”
The family remain committed to their campaign for change in the justice system, vowing to continue their work in honour of Michelle and other victims of crime.
