Marr College has been awarded Intermediate level of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education to support our young people in gaining a wider cultural understanding.

To achieve this award Marr College undertook various international projects including the exchange of letters and videos with students from three French schools, an interdisciplinary project with the school’s music department focusing on foreign influences on current French music and participation in the ‘La Fiesta du foot’ project where pupils produced football drills in both French and Spanish. The pupils also took part in a water sport trip to Spain and led an assembly and workshop to celebrate European Day of Languages.

Councillor William Grant, South Ayrshire Council's Policy Lead for Education and Lifelong Learning said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the staff and young people at Marr College. The projects and experiences undertaken to achieve this award have been invaluable in enabling the pupils to develop key skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork, whilst also creating new international friendships. A very big well done to everyone involved in achieving this award.”

Gillian McCallum, Acting Head Teacher of Marr College, said: “I am delighted that Marr College has achieved the Intermediate level of the British Council’s International School Award. This recognition reflects our commitment to fostering global awareness and cultural understanding for our pupils. I would like to thank the school’s dedicated staff for creating these enriching opportunities that continue to help our young people thrive and develop their skills and knowledge.”

Shannon West, Head of UK Schools for the British Council, said: “Marr College’s international work has earned the school well-deserved recognition with the British Council International School Award - Intermediate Certificate.

We are proud and delighted to work with this great school. Many thanks to everyone for all their commitment to developing international work and sharing excellent classroom practice and resources. This is enriching education for Marr College’s pupils, and their excellent collaborative projects with partner schools overseas are bringing the world into their classrooms. International work is key support for developing skills young people need to be globally aware citizens of the future.”
