Buying school uniforms for growing children can be an expensive business - but you can save money as well as helping to save the planet by taking part in a school uniform recycling initiative.
Most North Ayrshire primary and secondary schools or Parent Councils now offer some form of uniform recycling service, where items can be swapped, bought for a reduced price or obtained for free.
Annick Primary School in Irvine has offered a successful recycling service for around five years now, providing good quality, pre-loved uniform items to the community.
Staff at the school play their part by ensuring that the clothing is clean and well-displayed, with families are encouraged to donate any items they no longer need and help themselves to any items they require.
At the end of each school year, any lost property that remains unclaimed is also washed and added to the Uniform Station.
Annick Primary School’s Depute Head Teacher, Vicky McGregor, said: “Over the years our Uniform Station has gone from strength to strength, and we now have a range of items including shoes, bags and coats.
“We would like to thank all the people who have supported the scheme over the years, especially the staff who ensure that this fabulous resource remains a key asset for our community.”
Another school now offering the service is Largs Academy.
Set up last session by the Parent Council and a small group of parents, the school’s Sustainability Committee help to manage any new donations, with plans being made for events where all donated items will be given away on a first come, first served basis.
The school’s last giveaway event in August became a real community effort, with home baking, tea and coffee, and local business ‘Housework by Helen’ ironing the shirts.
The event also raised money for the Ellen MacArthur Trust to say thank you for their generous donation of water bottles for pupils.
Councillor John Bell, Cabinet Member for Education at North Ayrshire Council, said: “Children grow so quickly, and replacing uniform items can really add to the cost of the school year.
“Uniform recycling or swapping is a fantastic way for families to save on the expense of buying new items throughout the year, as well as saving clothes which are in good condition from going to landfill.”
Most North Ayrshire schools will accept donations of the following items which are in decent condition: Dresses, sports kit, trainers, shoes, jumpers, skirts, shirts, blazers, coats, polo shirts and trousers.
