Kilmarnock’s new 10k road race got off to a flying start when over 1300 runners raced Roon the Toon.
Leaving the Ayrshire Athletics Arena, competitors raced through the town centre and surrounding countryside over a very fast course.
Just over a minute separated the top three finishers – Paul Sorrie (Shettleston) finished in an incredible 32:12; David Miller (Irvine) was second with 32:51 and Kilmarnock lad and former Harrier Del Young (Garscube) finished third in 33:27.
The first woman across the line was Elspeth Curran (Kilbarchan) with 37:44, second was Lindsay Currie (Dumbarton) with 40:08 while third place went to her teammate Arlene Kelly with 41:27.
The race was started by Provost Jim Todd, who was disappointed to have to pull out of the race with a serious knee injury.
Provost Todd, who was joined by Council Leader Councillor Douglas Reid, said: “The Arena was absolutely buzzing. There were almost 1300 runners taking part and some well kent faces in the crowd.
“What really impressed me was the variety of ages and abilities taking part. Young kids in their teens to Hugh Rankin who is in his 80s all crossing the finishing line at the same time. It was incredibly inspiring.
“I would like to congratulate the Kilmarnock Harriers and in particular Ian Gebbie and Matt Dodds who organised the event.
“Kilmarnock hasn’t seen anything yet next year is going to be even bigger and better. I can’t wait to get involved.”
