Staff at NHS Ayrshire & Arran have been delighted to receive new scrubs at sites right across the health board – thanks to the efforts of a group of local sewing volunteers.
The group ‘For the Love of Scrubs’ has coordinated 35 Ayrshire volunteers, including individuals and businesses,who have used their sewing and dressmaking skills to make scrub suits for NHS staff.
Over 250 sets have already been produced and delivered to University Hospital Crosshouse, University Hospital Ayr, Woodland View, Ailsa Hospital, East Ayrshire Community Hospital and the Ayrshire Maternity Unit. Another 600 sets are in production, thanks to the hard work from the volunteer sewers.
Karen Vaughan is a maths teacher at Prestwick Academy, as well as the local ‘For the Love of Scrubs’ coordinator. She said:
“Our volunteers have done a fantastic job and really, we are just delighted to put our skills to good use during the coronavirus pandemic. So far we have dispersed more than2,500 metres of fabric – we have also been ensuring the volunteers have labels, waist tape and the correct patterns to make the suits needed for staff on the frontline.
“It is our way of saying thank you to those working for the local health service in these challenging times.”

“We have been overwhelmed by the offers of support we have received from the public, local businesses and organisations. The time and effort that has gone into making these hundreds of scrub suits has been a phenomenal effort that is hugely appreciated by our staff.
