Nominations now open for this year’s South Ayrshire Sports Awards

Outstanding sporting achievement from across South Ayrshire is set to be recognised at a special ceremony taking place later this year.

The South Ayrshire Sports Awards recognise participation at every level, with nominations now open. The awards give sports clubs the opportunity to highlight and recognise sporting talent but also recognise the invaluable voluntary contribution from parent helpers, coaches and officials. The awards incorporate categories from the South Ayrshire Sports Council and sportscotland's South Ayrshire Coaching, Officiating & Volunteering. The Sports Council categories, which include Sports Personality of the Year, are open to people from clubs affiliated to South Ayrshire Sports Council. The coaching, officiating & volunteering categories, which include ‘Community Coach of the Year’ and ‘Volunteer of the Year’ categories are open to all. Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure said the awards were a great opportunity to showcase local talent, “Every single week hundreds of people are out working in their communities to give young people a chance to take part in their chosen sports. “The army of coaches, officials and volunteers play their part in giving people the chance to try out and develop in both individual and team sports. “With a broad range of categories to choose from we’re looking forward to hearing from affiliated clubs and people working behind the scenes and I’m looking forward to meeting the class of 2017 at the ceremony later this year.” David Gee, a coach at the Prestwick Tennis Centre, won the Community Coach of the Year in 2016. He said taking part had been a great experience, “It was a nice surprise to find I’d been nominated for this award and I was delighted when it was announced on the night that I’d won. “I’d encourage others to nominate as there are many other coaches and volunteers who deserve the recognition.” The ceremony takes place at Ayr Town Hall on Wednesday 25th October 2017.
