A public consultation has been launched to gather views on the recent introduction of 20mph speed limits across North Ayrshire.

The North Ayrshire Council 20mph Public Consultation opened on Wednesday, July 1, and will remain available for eight weeks, closing on Wednesday, August 26.
Residents, businesses and road users across all six North Ayrshire localities are being encouraged to share their experiences of the temporary speed restrictions.

The Scottish Government has committed to working with councils to introduce 20mph speed limits in towns, cities and villages where appropriate.

The National 20mph Strategy aims to make roads safer, encourage active travel and create safer and more welcoming local communities.
Evidence highlighted by the council shows that a pedestrian involved in a collision with a vehicle travelling at 30mph is seven times more likely to die than if the vehicle was travelling at 20mph.
The Scottish Government’s vision for the strategy is: “Slower today for a safer tomorrow.”
North Ayrshire Council is now seeking feedback on the impact of the lower limits, including whether residents believe the changes have improved road safety, supported walking and cycling, or affected local communities.

Councillor Eleanor Collier, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy, said: “Anyone who lives or works in North Ayrshire will have noticed that signs introducing the lower speed limit started being installed in December 2025, and there are now more than 2,000 of these across North Ayrshire.
“I would encourage anyone with an interest in our roads to get involved and complete the online survey. Taking part will allow us to gauge the impact of the change.”

Responses received during the consultation will help North Ayrshire Council decide whether the temporary speed limits should become permanent and inform the future development of the 20mph programme.
Paper copies of the consultation are also available by contacting the council’s customer service team on 01294 310000.
