Prestwick Leisure Centre has enjoyed a remarkable start following its major refurbishment, with new figures revealing a significant rise in membership, attendance, and overall community engagement since the upgraded facility reopened.

South Ayrshire Council confirmed that active fitness memberships are already up by 18% compared to pre-closure levels, while overall attendance for October has increased by 8% on the same month last year. The gym has been one of the busiest areas of the centre, recording a 61% rise in usage during its first month back in operation. Wet-side activity has seen similar enthusiasm, with classes such as Evolve Aqua Fit and GP Referral sessions growing by 83%.

Beyond improved participation, the refurbishment has brought major sustainability gains. A comparison of energy consumption between 2023 and 2025 shows a 38% reduction in gas usage and a 60% reduction in electricity use. These efficiencies are expected to save the council around £45,000 per year in avoided energy costs.

Visitors have been quick to praise the transformed venue. Many have highlighted the modern Changing Village, a brighter and more accessible poolside area, a welcoming reception, improved lighting, and a more comfortable gym environment. Staff have also spoken positively about the contemporary facilities and redesigned workspaces, describing the centre as a pleasure to operate in.

Councillor Alec Clark, Depute Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Policy Lead for Commercial and Operational Services, said the community response reflects the value of investing in public wellbeing. He noted the surge in memberships, increased footfall, and positive feedback as clear signs that the refurbished centre is meeting local expectations.

Councillor Chris Cullen, Policy Lead for Leisure and Community Services, added that the early success is a strong indication of what the new facility offers. He said the significant rise in member satisfaction and participation shows that the modernised centre is delivering a better all-round experience for users.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, Policy Lead for Housing and Property Services, highlighted the environmental achievements of the project. He said the substantial drop in energy usage demonstrates the effectiveness of the upgrade works, delivering both cost savings and a meaningful reduction in the council’s carbon footprint.

With strong attendance, enthusiastic customer feedback, and measurable environmental benefits already taking shape, Prestwick Leisure Centre’s refurbishment is being hailed as a major step forward for community sport, fitness, and sustainability in South Ayrshire.
