Proposals unveiled for new super school for Maybole and North Carrick

People in Maybole and North Carrick are being given their say on proposals to transform education in the area.

A consultation is now underway on proposals which, if approved, will lead to the creation of a new Maybole Community Campus in the grounds of the existing Carrick Academy.

The £42 million project would have capacity for an estimated 1,400 pupils at a new Carrick Academy, an amalgamated Cairn Primary and Gardenrose Primary, a new St Cuthbert’s Primary, alongside associated early years provision, two full size all-weather pitches, and shared community facilities.

A public consultation is being held until Friday 20 April 2018 where people will be able to have their say on the proposals. The outcome of this will be considered by Councillors this summer for a final decision.

Councillor William Grant, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning said the proposals presented a once in a lifetime opportunity, “We’re committed to providing young people with the best chances in life and while the standard of education in Maybole is high, the existing schools are badly in need of significant investment.

“By creating a brand new community campus, we’ll create a network of schools on a par with similar projects that have been completed or are underway across South Ayrshire, and which are already helping to transform the way people are taught.

“I’d urge anyone with an interest in these proposals to make their comments known through the consultation process, as their views will be considered ahead of a final decision being made later this year.”

The project will also consider the impact of Scottish Government’s plans to double early years childcare to 1140 hours per child by 2020, an issue that will be explored in a separate report.

Public meetings have been arranged for parents/carers and other stakeholders to discuss the proposal in detail:

Cairn Primary School: Tuesday 20 March at 7.00pm

Gardenrose Primary School: Wednesday 21 March at 7.00pm

St Cuthbert’s Primary School: Thursday 22 March at 7.00pm

Interested parties are invited to make written representations on the proposal no later than Friday 20 April 2018.
