On Thursday 8 May, we will commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). This provides us with the opportunity to remember some of our heroes who served during the Second World War.

After almost six years of fighting, Germany surrendered to the Allied forces, bringing an end to the conflict across Europe. In Britain, thousands of civilians took to the streets to celebrate the news, eager to spend time with loved ones, yet remembering those who were missing in action or were still involved in the conflict in the Far East.
South Ayrshire Council's Chief Executive, Mike Newall, said:
"VE Day is a significant day in history and with each passing year, the importance of marking the anniversary grows. The war affected the whole country, impacting the lives of not only those enlisted in the Armed Forces, but also those who remained at home. We all have a connection to the war, whether it's a relative, friend or neighbour who experienced the conflict. It's therefore important to spare a few moments to reflect upon the sacrifices made by many during this time to protect the freedoms that we are accustomed to today."

Gavin Davey, Area Director for Scotland, Northeast England and Northern Ireland, at the RAF Benevolent Fund (South Ayrshire Council's Airshow Charity Partner) said:
"As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we recall with enormous gratitude the sacrifices that were made by so many during the Second World War, by military personnel, civilians and families alike. We honour those who gave their lives and thank those who walk among us today, for their enduring legacy.
"The RAF Benevolent Fund remains there for serving and former serving RAF personnel, the bereaved and their families today as we were in 1945. We want to encourage members of the RAF Family in Ayrshire and the west of Scotland, who may require financial, practical or emotional assistance to reach out to us, whenever they need us."
