Provost Iain Campbell has stepped down from his role at South Ayrshire Council after a meeting of the full council on Thursday.
Campbell cited concerns about the tone and conduct of discussions among councillors but confirmed he would remain as an elected member until the end of the current term.
His resignation came shortly after a narrow vote (14–13) to remove Councillor Bob Pollock from his position as depute leader.
Cllr Pollock had expressed disappointment at recent developments and said he no longer had confidence in the current leader, while affirming his support for the wider administration.
The council is now expected to consider next steps regarding leadership roles in due course.
