James Clements brings a striking new interpretation of Scotland’s national poet to audiences this November with The Burns Project, a historical verbatim production directed by multi-award-winning theatre maker Cora Bissett and presented in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland.

The production will be staged at the
Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Ayrshire – Saturday 29 November
Show times: 3.30pm and 7.30pm
Drawing on unprecedented access to Burns’ private letters and recently digitised archival material, Clements steps beyond the mythology to examine the man behind the legend. His performance builds a vivid and often surprising portrait of Robert Burns, revealing a figure of great talent and great contradictions.
Critics have already praised the work as a standout of the year. The Herald described it as “an immaculately designed, smartly staged piece that offers up a portrait of a complex, at times flawed man,” placing it among the Top 10 Shows of the Edinburgh Festivals. The Scotsman highlighted its lyrical flair, the Guardian noted its subtle and imaginative approach, and Fest Magazine applauded its dramatic exploration of Burns’ life and loves.
First premiered at the National Trust for Scotland’s Georgian House during the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the piece combines Clements’ meticulous research with atmospheric live music from acclaimed instrumentalist Lisa Rigby. Together, they create a theatrical experience that reframes Burns through his own words, weaving the poet’s humour, brilliance, passions, and imperfections into a compelling and human narrative.
Performed in-the-round and styled after a traditional Burns Supper, each staging immerses its audience within the historic walls of Brodie Castle, Drum Castle, and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Clements guides viewers through key moments in Burns’ life, exploring his relationships, ideals, struggles, and legacy in a way that resonates with contemporary Scotland.
With limited ticket availability and a setting that places the story at the very heart of Burns’ world, The Burns Project promises a bold and intimate encounter with a cultural icon. Through archival treasures and evocative storytelling, the production invites audiences to meet Burns anew, alive on stage in all his brilliance, complexity, and humanity.
