A leading figure in Troon’s musical and community life has been recognised for decades of dedication, as Pipe Major Christopher Bone of the 1st Troon Boys’ Brigade Pipe Band has been named Civic Award Winner and Citizen of the Year for 2026.

Troon Community Council announced the honour in recognition of Chris’s outstanding contribution to both the band and the wider community, following more than 30 years at the helm as Pipe Major.

Under his leadership, the band has grown into one of the most respected pipe bands in the country, achieving success at the highest level of competition. Among its many accolades are two World Championship titles, secured in 2016 and 2022, alongside victories at the European, UK, British and Scottish Championships.

The band’s reputation has also extended far beyond Ayrshire, with international performances including a tour of China. Closer to home, they have shared the stage with the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and performed on prestigious occasions for members of the Royal Family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, as well as King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their time as Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

Despite its global achievements, the band has remained firmly rooted in the Troon community. Regular appearances at local events such as church parades, gala days and civic occasions have ensured it continues to play a visible and valued role in the town.

For more than three decades, Chris has devoted countless hours each week to mentoring and developing young musicians, helping to shape generations of pipers and drummers. His commitment to teaching and leadership has been credited with maintaining the band’s high standards while fostering a strong sense of community spirit.

The award was formally presented during the band’s Spring Concert, where members of Troon Community Council, including Frances Carson and Fiona Girvan, attended to mark the occasion.

The honour recognises not only Chris’s musical achievements but also his lasting impact on the lives of young people in Troon and his continued dedication to the town.
