Winners announced for Troon Golf Weekender 2017

More than 300 golfers from across the UK have battled it out at the Troon Golf Weekender 2017.
Now in its 57th year, the competition provided a serious challenge for amateur golfers, with a broad range of events on offer for people of different abilities. The Troon Golf Weekender was played between Darley, Lochgreen, and Fullarton Golf Courses from Friday 25 – Sunday 27 August. The 2017 winners have been announced for five different competitions, which had £3,500 prize money up for grabs across all events:
Mills Quaich: The winner was Joe Murray (Huyton and Prescot GC), with a score of 146. Craig Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert GC) was runner-up with a score of 148.
Troon Rose Bowl: The winner was George Walker (Ashton and Lea GC), with a score of 135. 20 year old Andrew McPhillimy from Troon (Kilmarnock Barassie GC) was runner-up, with a score of 140.
Open Stableford Competition: The winner was 20 year old Andrew McPhillimy from Troon (Kilmarnock Barassie GC), with a score of 37. S Burns Caldwell was runner-up, with a score of 36.
Charles Buchanan Veteran Shield: Paul Sinclair (Crow Wood GC), with a score of 68. Andrew Birks (Troon Wellbeck GC) was runner-up with a score of 72.
Ladies Jubilee Cup: The winner was Fiona McAlister (Prestwick St Cuthbert GC), with a score of 71. The best scratch went to Fiona Brawley (Kilmarnock Barassie GC), with a score of 84.
Open Mixed Foursomes: The winners were A Brunt (Newcastle under Lyme GC) and T Colin (Newcastle under Lyme GC), with a score of 55. The best scratch went to Margaret Ferguson (Kilmarnock Barassie GC) and Robert Ferguson (Royal Troon GC), with a score of 71.
Trophies on the day were awarded by South Ayrshire Provost, Helen Moonie. Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure thanked everyone involved for making the event such a success, “With hundreds of golfers descending on Troon, we had an army of people working hard behind the scenes to make sure everything went off as smoothly as possible. “Although the players faced mixed playing conditions, with torrential rain on Friday, the competition was tight, and golfers were keen to make their mark on a competition that’s been a popular fixture since the 1960s. “With the newly refurbished clubhouse acting as the base for competitors and spectators alike, the Troon Golf Weekender helps to promote South Ayrshire as a go-to destination, while also showcasing our ongoing efforts to promote Golf to a new generation.” Golf South Ayrshire operates eight courses, with Belleisle, Troon, Girvan, Dalmilling, and Maybole all playing a part in providing a wide-range of courses for players of all abilities.
Investment of £3.5million has seen the creation of a new clubhouse at Belleisle and major refurbishments at both Troon and Girvan clubhouses.
The investment is designed to enhance standards for existing members while also encouraging a new generation to take up the sport.
