The Scottish Maritime Museum is inviting visitors to take part in World Museum Selfie Day 2026, encouraging people of all ages to explore Scotland’s maritime heritage while joining a global celebration of museums and culture.

Marking the annual event, the museum is welcoming the public to its historic Linthouse building in Irvine, offering visitors the chance to discover stories of shipbuilding, seafaring, and industrial innovation that have shaped Scotland’s coastal communities.
Visitors are being encouraged to take a selfie either inside or outside the museum during their visit and share their photographs on social media. Those taking part are asked to tag the museum and use the hashtags #MuseumSelfieDay and #ScotMaritime, helping to showcase the museum’s collections and historic setting to a wider audience.

World Museum Selfie Day is an international initiative designed to highlight the role museums play in preserving heritage, inspiring learning, and connecting communities. The Scottish Maritime Museum’s participation places a spotlight on Ayrshire’s rich maritime past, as well as the ongoing importance of the Linthouse building as a space for education, reflection, and engagement.
The museum team say the event offers a relaxed and accessible way for people to engage with history, whether they are regular visitors or discovering the museum for the first time.
