This year’s winners have been announced from the 59th Troon Golf Weekender. More than 300 golfers competed in the tournament designed to provide a serious challenge for amateur golfers of different abilities.
The Troon Golf Weekender was played between Darley, Lochgreen, and Fullarton Golf Courses between Friday 23 - Sunday 25, August. The Troon Golf Weekender is open to all amateur golfers who are members of a recognised club with a recognised CONGU handicap. Competitors played on links courses, while competing for a number of historic trophies and generous prize funds.
There were five different competitions, including the showcase Mills Quaich & Troon Rosebowl Tournament, with £3,500 prize money up for grabs across all events.
The 2019 winners were:
Mills Quaich: The winner was Joe Murray (Huyton & Prescott GC), with a score of 144. Craig Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert GC) was runner-up with a score of 145.
Troon Rose Bowl: The winner was Tony Mendy (Huyton & Prescott GC), with a score of 138. Derek McEwan (Troon Welbeck GC) was runner-up, with a score of 141.
Open Stableford Competition: The winner was Amjad Butt (Sale GC), with a score of 42. Mohammed Naeem was runner-up, with a score of 38.
Charles Buchanan Veteran Shield: The winner was Murray Hardie (Glenbervie GC), with a score of 70. Robert Houston (Troon Welbeck GC) was runner-up with a score of 70.
Ladies Jubilee Cup: The winner was Joanne Sharp (Kilmarnock Barassie GC), with a score of 73. The best scratch went to Helena Fox (Newton Stewart GC), with a score of 87.
Open Mixed Foursomes: The winners were Linda Thorpe (Richmond GC) and Mark Thorpe (Darlington GC), with a score of 65.5.Marlene Dodds (Prestwick St Cuthbert GC) and Mark Thorpe (Darlington GC) were runners-up with a score of 63.
Trophies on the day were awarded by South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie, who said: “I was delighted to present the winners with their prizes. As always, this was a hotly contested competition and I would like to thank all those that took part.
Councillor Brian McGinley Economy and Culture Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “Our competitions are a great way of nurturing local talent and it’s fantastic that home-grown golfers have the chance to hone their skills against some of the best golfers in Scotland and beyond.”
