Quite a few people were asking what on earth laded at Prestwick just as it was getting dark ?

The answer is 2 Boeing V22 Ospreys belonging to the United States Air Force.

Aviation Editor Doug Maclean.

They are big, powerful and heavy. The Osprey is 57 feet long and powered by 2 Rolls Royce jet engines. It is described by Boeing as a multirole combat aircraft which utilises tilt rotor technology.

They can fly like a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft because the rotors tilt to a vertical position for landing or take off and then rotate to become horizontal like a conventional aircraft.

When they arrived at Prestwick they did an orbit over Ayr before coming in to land. That certainly drew attention to their arrival. Although the Osprey has been flying since the 1980s only the US and Japan operate them and they are seldom seen at Prestwick.

Our ace photographer Eddie Wallace was at the airport as they arrived and managed a few pictures of them in the rapidly fading light.
