Grange Academy to be stars of Maths Week 2022

BBC Bitesize spent the day at Grange Academy recently filming daily challenge videos that will run during Maths Week Scotland 2022, the annual national celebration of Maths.

From Monday 26 September until Sunday 2 October, young Mathematicians will be working on Maths Week Daily Challenges thanks to the BBC videos featuring resident Maths geek Mr Smith and Anya, Austin, Domi, Elizabeth, Eloise, Jack, Kyle, Leni, Niamh, Poppy, Yvie and Zoe from S2.

The videos that include puzzles devised by the Scottish Mathematical Council, will be launched just before Maths Week on social media Facebook Twitter @mathsweekscot #MathsWeekScotland and hosted on BBC Bitesize

Mr Smith, resident geek of the Maths Department, said:

"We were delighted that Grange Academy was selected for the fifth year running to be the stars of the Maths Week Scotland Daily Challenges. The whole experience is brilliant for the young folk, they get a real glimpse into what it's like being part of a film crew.

“Our students were not only solving problems in real time and filming top tips to help young Maths students all over Scotland. They were also learning about lighting, framing shots, scripts, editing - hopefully it’s inspired them to consider a career in media in the future, assuming they can be pried away from Mathematics! Every one of our young people was a credit to Grange Academy.”

Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning, Education and Skills and Culture said:

“It is great that our young people from Grange Academy are taking a starring role in the BBC Bitesize Daily Challenge for Maths Week Scotland.

“When it comes to Maths changing the learning mind-set for our children and young people is so important. STEM has an essential role to play in creating employment for our children and young people in the future so starting early, with positive learning experiences is very beneficial.”

Maths Week Scotland will see events happening across the country, including competitions involving problem-solving and creative photography. Whether you are a teacher, pupil, parent, number fanatic or even a Maths-phobe, to find out more about this year's Maths Week Scotland, visit
