Key projects identified for Prestwick Regeneration masterplan

At a Council meeting on Thursday 26 March, Councillors agreed to progress three major projects using funding from the Prestwick Capital Regeneration budget.

Following the commitment made in 2024 of £2million for regeneration investment within Prestwick, South Ayrshire Council engaged with Prestwick Civic Pride, stakeholders, and the public to identify key project strands for allocation of funding.

As a result of this consultation, £1million has been budgeted to fund improvements to Prestwick Promenade and Seafront with a view to increasing the town’s profile as a tourist destination and increase economic activity within the town. This would be delivered through enhancing arrival points, accessibility, public realm quality, and the visitor experience across key ‘Gateway Locations’ including Links Road, Burgh Road and Grangemuir Road.

Feedback from the community also identified an appetite for a Bathing Lake (or ‘Lido’). Council staff will engage with members of the community to establish a trust body ahead of commissioning a feasibility study for the project. Councillors agreed to dedicate £50,000 from regeneration funds to assess technical, environmental, financial and operational considerations before any further capital investment is made.

The reinstatement of the Freeman’s Hall steeple was also identified by a significant number of stakeholders as a priority heritage project due to its historic, architectural, and civic significance within Prestwick town centre. Assessments undertaken suggest that restoration of the landmark using salvaged original materials may be feasible, but works are subject to further investigation.

The reinstatement could be achieved with financial support via grant funding. A budget allocation of £750,000 from the Prestwick Capital Regeneration Budget will be retained until the outcome of these applications is confirmed, at which point a report will be brought before members for consideration.

Kevin Braidwood, Depute Chief Executive and Director of Housing, Operations and Development, said: “I’m pleased that we’ve been able to provide an update on regeneration plans for Prestwick and identify priorities in line with feedback from stakeholders and the public. This investment aims to drive Prestwick forward – creating opportunities for visitors and residents to enjoy our scenic coast – as well as maintaining the town’s rich history and heritage.”
