Young people from six South Ayrshire secondary schools recently showcased their talents in an exciting modern languages football competition.

The annual event, held in collaboration with Ayr United Football Club, took place on Tuesday 28 April and was organised by the South Ayrshire 1+2 languages and South Ayrshire Reads teams.
S3 pupils from Queen Margaret Academy, Belmont Academy, Prestwick Academy, Marr College, Kyle Academy and Carrick Academy presented a video of football drills in French or Spanish to a panel of judges. Pupils also created their own virtual football teams and logo.
The young people presented their projects to podcaster and football fanatic, Sean McDonald, Ayr United representative Matthew Merry and South Ayrshire Read’s representative, Sally Law.
Following the presentations, the winners were:
Overall winner (French) – Marr College
Best use of language (French) – Prestwick Academy
Overall winner (Spanish) – Marr College
Best use of language (Spanish) – Marr College
Director of Education, Scott Mulholland said: “This unique initiative provides pupils with the opportunity to be creative while learning and embracing multiple languages. I am delighted to see so many young people getting involved in the project which has been fantastic in fostering key skills such as teamwork and communication.”
Martin Tocker, General Manager of Ayr United Football Club said: “We were delighted to welcome back the Languages Department to Ayr United again this year. Sport, and football particularly in Scotland, has the power to inspire and motivate members of our communities from all walks of life and across all age groups. It was once again very impressive to see the talent and effort from the pupils who attended this year. Well done to everyone involved.”
