The Quay Zone (TQZ) leisure facility in Girvan is set to re-open its doors on Friday 23 January.

The facility, which was closed following major storm damage in 2024, has undergone a complete overhaul culminating in a phase 1 reopening of the swimming pool, fitness suite and gym.

TQZ will be operating 7 days a week. Customers will be able use the gym's brand-new Pulse Fitness cardio, resistance and free weight equipment. The fitness studio has also been improved with a new beechwood sprung floor.

South Ayrshire Council will continue to work with facility operators South Carrick Community Leisure (SCCL). Contractors are rolling out a major upgrade to the kitchen and café — expanding onto the first floor and introducing a new terrace that's designed to maximise the stunning views. This phase will also see the much‑loved soft‑play reinstated, with works scheduled for completion in the first half of 2026.

Councillor Alec Clark, Depute Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Policy Lead for Commercial / Operational Services whose remit includes tourism and rural communities said: "This is great news for Girvan and South Carrick. During the closure we've taken the opportunity to make significant improvements, and these upgrades will ensure the facility reaches its full potential.

"We've been working closely with SCCL to ensure everything is ready for the phase 1 re-opening. They have a full programme of classes and I'm sure customers will be back in their droves."

Councillor Chris Cullen, Policy Lead for Leisure and Community Services said:

"This is such an important facility, and I am delighted that the pool, gym and fitness suite are set to re-open. We worked hard to provide temporary accommodations so that SCCL's classes could continue, but it will be great to see TQZ open its doors once more.

"This is a huge step towards a full reopening which is only a few months away. I have no doubt the completed facility will return as a hub for the local community."

Councillor Martin Kilbride, Policy Lead for Housing and Property Services said:

"I would like to thank everyone involved in the completion of phase 1. Last year the interior had to be taken back to concrete to allow the building to dry out, so significant progress has been made.

"We are now well on our way to having a much-improved facility which is ably managed by our partners SCCL."

Allan Rattray, Chairperson of South Carrick Community Leisure said:

"After two long years we are delighted to be able to welcome back the community to The Quay Zone. Repairing TQZ has been a long and complicated business but I am sure everyone will agree that the rejuvenated pool, gym and studio facilities in some way make up for the long wait. Looking forward we expect the second phase to be handed back to us in the spring and to welcoming everyone to our new café, soft play and balcony facilities. On behalf of South Carrick Community Leisure, I would like to thank our Quay Zone staff for maintaining services in challenging times, the community for its continued support and South Ayrshire Council for the work involved in resurrecting The Quay Zone."
