An outstanding performance helped kick start a lively programme for the Ayr Concert Series 2018/19. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra got things underway recently (Wed 3 October) with an audience of more than 200 people enjoying a performance including the music of Haydn, Schubert and Brahms at Ayr Town Hall.
Now in its 32nd year, the Ayr Concert Series is being staged by volunteers from the Ayr Arts Guild on behalf of South Ayrshire Council.
Upcoming concerts will see three visits by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, two of which are being recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3, a return visit from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and one from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera. The concerts bring to life some of the best loved music from composers including Haydn, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Prokofiev and Beethoven.
The series features a number of leading artists including director / oboist François Leleux; conductor Richard Farnes and mezzo-soprano Christine Rice; conductor Gavin Sutherland and jazz singer Clare Teal will celebrate Christmas with the BBC SSO; a New Year gala concert with Duncan Ward conducting and Stephanie Gonley on violin. 2019 will see concerts featuring conductor Dane Lam and oboist Amy Turner; with the series rounded-off with violinist Laura Samuel, conducted by Alexander Liebreich.
Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure said the quality of the programme spoke for itself,
"We're committed to working with partners to improve and promote tourism through a co-ordinated programme of events and activities, and the brilliant Ayr Concert Series is a well-established part of our wider work.
"Having enjoyed a lively opening concert we're looking forward to welcoming hundreds of people from South Ayrshire and across Scotland to enjoy the high calibre of artists we attract each and every year.
"I'd recommend that anyone who hasn't made it along to make a date with the five remaining concerts, some of which will be broadcast on national radio, as you won't be disappointed."
Jimmy McInnes, Vice Chairman of Ayr Arts Guild added, "We're pleased to play our part in arranging visits to Ayr by Scottish orchestras with international soloists.
The quality of the professional musicians is always of the highest, and our opening concert with Francois Leleux proved to be absolutely outstanding – long may this unique partnership between the voluntary sector and the local authority continue. I always look forward to the next orchestral concert in Ayr Town Hall, where the acoustics are good enough for the BBC to record their programmes for later broadcast on Radio 3."
The second concert featuring the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and music from Rossini and Tchaikovsky takes place on Friday 2 November at 7:30-pm at Ayr Town Hall. The full programme is available here. Tickets are available from the Ayr Gaiety Box Office on 01292 288 235 or online.External link
