THREATS

Tornadoes; hail to 30mm diameter; wind gusts to 60-65mph; CG lightning

SYNOPSIS

A moist and unstable airmass will be in place across the area overnight. A well-marked upper trough will move NNE overnight across the area, accompanied by widespread showers and some thunderstorms. Strong low-level and deep layer shear will be present with this system. Instability will be highest around and close to coastal areas, but the strong flow and dynamics mean cells may persist inland too.

The most likely mode will be several convective lines, but some cells are possible too - in both cases, rotation may develop within stronger updraughts, with the chance of supercells. Strong low-level shear supports the risk of tornadoes in the stronger activity - damaging straight line winds will be possible too, along with hail to around 30mm diameter. CG lightning is also a hazard.

The activity will move into the SW of the watch area this evening and then move NNE overnight. A second round of activity may push ENE across parts of Ireland, N Ireland, N England, N Wales and S Scotland late tonight into tomorrow morning, associated with the 'wrap-around' of the parent, large low, which should be near NW Ireland by that stage.
