NHS Ayrshire & Arran is starting to allow more flexible visiting in our hospitals after a recent period where only essential visits were supported.

Jennifer Wilson, Nurse Director, said: “We want to sincerely thank patients and their families for their understanding and support during this time. Having these visiting restrictions has helped us protect vulnerable patients and manage infection risks.
“While we are seeing a small reduction in flu cases within our hospitals, infection rates in the wider community continue to rise and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.
“However, we know how important visiting is for patients and their loved ones, and we are committed to balancing this with the need to keep everyone safe.”
From today, Thursday 11 December, non-essential visiting will be supported during the following times, with one visitor allowed per patient:
• 2pm to 3pm in the afternoon
• 7pm to 8pm in the evening
Exceptions will continue for end-of-life care and for patients who require additional support due to cognitive impairment or complex care needs. Families should speak to the Senior Charge Nurse to make arrangements in these circumstances.
We ask that anyone who feels unwell, even with mild symptoms, does not visit hospitals or healthcare settings. This is vital to prevent the spread of infection and protect vulnerable patients.
Face masks will continue to be available at ward entrances, and we encourage all visitors to wear them during their visit.
Please remember that the seasonal flu vaccination for those who are eligible is the best way to protect individuals. Washing our hands regularly, covering our noses and mouths when sneezing and coughing and disposing of used tissues carefully will help stop viruses spreading.
Jennifer Wilson adds: “We will review the situation daily and provide updates as needed. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support in helping us keep patients, staff and visitors safe.”
